2017 Summer Second Ride, Day 68, Sep 15, Fri

Planned route

Comfort Inn Portland, OR * Florence, OR

Planned Stops

We might stop at the Tillamook cheese factory for a bite to eat and a break. And at some overviews to take a few pictures.

Ride Conditions

Cold 42 degrees this morning, kept checking what the temp was, highest 70 at about 4pm. But clear and sunny skies. I had a bit of a chill all day.

Today’s Ride

I am fascinated with the Columbia River. Minnie and I have been up and down it several times. The size of the ships that come into Portland and industry around the river. It’s hard to find a good spot to be able to watch what is happening on the river. We have tried parking along the river at different places where I can view the river and Minnie can read a book.

So, I like driving along the Columbia River. This trip we are going to Astoria, OR which is only a few miles from where we spent Thursday night. Astoria is also a favorite place for me. There is Maritime Museum that is very interesting. We didn’t stop today at the museum, but Minnie did get a few pictures of ships in the river and one pic of downtown.

Tillamook, OR

We have been to Tillamook cheese factory a few times to see the making and packaging of cheese. The place is very busy, and congested parking, each of the times we have been there. This time it was more congested because they are expanding the factory. They have a temporary setup for visitors to taste the cheese but you can’t see the making and packaging of the cheese.

My reason was not to see how the cheese is made, I wanted a grilled sandwich and a clean bathroom. I got those which was OK for me, others might be disappointed that they couldn’t tour the plant.

No, my problem was trying to ride thru the town of Tillamook. Traffic was a nightmare. I was having flashbacks of downtown Portland. It took a while but we did get thru town.

Highway 101

The 101 highway has some spectacular views, which makes the ride fun and rewarding. But can be a challenging ride also. The narrow two curvy lanes, big trucks, motorhomes and RV’s, makes for slow going at times. This was our fourth time driving on the 101 Pacific Coast Highway, but first time on a motorcycle. I can say without a doubt it’s a lot colder riding the Pacific Coast Highway on the bike. We have been on the coast for four days, and the temperature has been between the low 50’s to the high 60’s.

Where We stopped for the Night

At the Quality Inn in Florence, OR. We had a quality stay, rooms were nice, everything worked, plenty of outlets for charging devices. Typical hot breakfast, cold powdered eggs and sausages. Internet service was great. There was a store next to the motel and a Taco Bell across the street.

I would stay here again and I would recommend this motel to others.
